Games to careers: how we prepare kids for jobs of the future
Walk into an IDEA Lab Kids classroom and you’ll see a hub of activity – robot battles, drones hovering or kids coding.
If it looks like play, you might wonder, what skills are they learning? Plenty!
Some camps are teaching kids teamwork as together they program drones to hover and soar. Others teach kids how to excel in Minecraft, coding and world building.
What makes our camps unique is they combine soft skills such as cooperation, following instructions and teamwork with the many tech skills needed to design, build, program and code.
Tech skills are increasingly essential.
STEM jobs are growing faster than average (10 percent growth compared with 5 percent growth in non-STEM fields).
STEM jobs pay a national average salary of $87,570, nearly twice the average for non-STEM jobs ($45,700).
According to one study, 85 per cent of the jobs that will exist in 2030 haven’t even been invented yet. If that seems high, remember a time, not so long ago, when social media manager, web developer and digital marketer roles didn’t exist – now nearly every company has someone in those roles.
These are just a few high-tech, high fun options for kids of all ages this summer.

Jr. Coding Camp: Tynker
Campers work with the easy programming language Tynker as they create games. Learning to code with Idea Lab is engaging and fun even at a young age. Kids rapidly learn fundamental programming concepts as they drag and drop their way to writing actual code.
LEGO Robotics: Rescue Bots
IDEA Lab Robotics provides fun, hands-on projects to get your child’s creative juices flowing. Working with a robotics teacher, campers will participate in team challenges and learn how to build robots using various LEGO programming tools — all while making friends, developing new skills and having a great time with STEAM.
Video Game Scripting & Strategy with Augmented Reality
Imagine Pokemon Go meets a game design class. Augmented reality is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented (or supplemented) by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. As a result, the technology functions by enhancing one’s current perception of reality. In this IDEA Lab camp, you will learn to code your own video game and then embed 3D animated objects within the game. Code will be provided so that you can continue to expand on your game once the camp ends.
IDEA Building Company: Toy Engineering
Join Idea Lab as we design, test and build our very own toy store by using found object such as batteries, magnets, old gadgets to design, build and fine-tune simple toys. This camp will challenge our budding engineers to be creative in repurposing preexisting objects into new toys that spin, move, light up or do other cool things while teaching them about engineering principles.
Jr. Coding Lab with Dash Robots
Dash and Dot are really popular around Idea Lab. Coding is as easy as 1-2-3 with Dash and his buddy Dot. Learn the basics and introduction to block coding and learn how it is the basis for all things coding or coding related.
